Dear Pastor and Church Leader,
You hear the word multiplication frequently from EFCA leaders. It’s in our mission statement: The EFCA exists to glorify God by multiplying transformational churches among all people.
You hear a lot about multiplication from us district leaders too. We advocate the multiplying of disciples and leaders and ministries and churches.
The New Testament uses the term (depending on the translation) as a happy description of the spread of the gospel: And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith (Acts 6:7 ESV). So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied (Acts 9:31 ESV). But the word of God increased and multiplied (Acts 12:24 ESV).
Bottom line: multiplication describes a definite spread of the gospel, remarkable increase in the number of disciples.
So how do we do this? What does it look like in and through a local church?
This year’s conference will point us to answers. Our speaker is a veteran shepherd with a track record of multiplication. Jan David Hettinga was our speaker in 2008. We’ve invited him back to help us understand and experience multiplication. His ministry in and through Northshore Community Church in the Seattle area has seen a network of 20 churches planted so far. He also led his congregation through an intentional succession of leadership, passing the baton of his pastorate to a younger man.
Jan’s heart beats with the same values as ours. He will help us see how to translate those values into multiplication.
Pray for the conference. We hope we can enjoy your fellowship there.
